Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market, Copenhagen, Denmark

Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market (simply called “Tivoli” by Danes) is one of the world’s oldest surviving amusement parks and the second-oldest still-operating amusement park globally (after Dyrehavsbakken, also in Denmark). It opened in 1843 and has been a cornerstone of Copenhagen’s cultural life for over 180 years.

Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market

While Nyhavn and Strøget have their own lovely stalls, the true heart of Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market, Copenhagen’s Christmas spirit beats inside the historic Tivoli Gardens. From mid-November, the 180-year-old amusement park transforms into a glittering winter wonderland with over 70 stalls, half a million lights, and a distinctly Danish concept: hygge.

Imagine riding the vintage wooden roller coaster with snowflakes swirling around you, then warming up with æbleskiver (puffy spherical pancakes) dusted with powdered sugar and served with gløgg – Scandinavian mulled wine enriched with almonds and raisins.

"Tivoli"

The Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market stalls are curated with Nordic design in mind. Expect handmade wool sweaters from the Faroe Islands, delicate Hoptimist figures, and Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates. The scent of roasted almonds competes with flæskesteg sandwiches and caramelized potatoes.

Tivoli’s lake becomes a romantic ice-skating rink framed by thousands of lights, and the Moorish Palace hosts daily theater shows and ballet performances of The Nutcracker.

For something uniquely Danish, visit the Nissekammeret – Santa’s helpers’ workshop – where children can bake cookies with real nisser (Danish elves with long red hats).

In Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market, Christmas isn’t just celebrated – it’s wrapped in twinkling lights and served with a generous helping of pure joy.

» Still located on the exact same site inside the original moat-like lake and gardens.
» Attracts around 4–5 million visitors annually (second-most visited seasonal theme park in the world after Europa-Park in Germany).
» Remains a blend of classic charm and modern thrill rides, with 28 restaurants, concert venues (Tivoli Concert Hall hosts world-class orchestras), and gardens that are beautiful year-round.
» The Tivoli Guards (Tivoli Youth Guard), a boys’ marching band founded in 1844—members aged 8–16 still parade in red uniforms.
» The wooden Rutschebanen roller coaster (1914) – brake operators still ride with you to control speed.
» Seasonal operation: Originally open only in summer; now also famous for its Halloween and Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market (the Christmas season attracts over a million visitors).

In short: Tivoli is not just an amusement park—it’s a living piece of Danish cultural heritage that has entertained generations of Copenhageners (and visitors) since 1843.
