Strasbourg: The Capital of France’s Oldest Christmas Market

Strasbourg, the elegant capital of Alsace and seat of the European Parliament, sits gracefully on the Rhine River where France and Germany meet, blending both cultures in its language, architecture, and cuisine. Its UNESCO-listed Grande Île historic center is a fairy-tale maze of half-timbered houses, winding canals, and the soaring pink sandstone cathedral that has dominated the skyline since the Middle Ages. Especially in winter, when the city crowns itself “Capital of Christmas,” Strasbourg transforms into one of Europe’s most enchanting and romantic destinations.

Capitale de Noël | The Capital of Christmas

If one city has earned the official title “Capitale de Noël,” it’s Strasbourg. Since 1570, this Alsatian gem on the French-German border has hosted the oldest documented Christmas market in France. Today, the Christkindelsmärik sprawls across 12 locations throughout the city, but the heart beats strongest around Place de la Cathédrale and Place Kléber.

Frances Oldest Christmas Market

The majestic pink sandstone cathedral towers above hundreds of wooden chalets decorated with teddy bears, hearts, and twinkling lights during this christmas market. The scent of vin chaud (French mulled wine) spiced with cinnamon and orange mingles with bredele (tiny Alsatian Christmas cookies) and pain d’épices.

Joyeux Noël

What sets Strasbourg apart is its Franco-German soul. You’ll hear “Joyeux Noël” and “Fröhliche Weihnachten” in the same breath. Try a tarte flambée fresh from a wood-fired oven, then wander to the “OFF” market in Place Grimmeissen for eco-friendly and designer crafts.

Don’t miss the 30-meter Great Christmas Tree on Place Kléber – one of the tallest decorated natural trees in Europe – or the enchanting Village of Sharing in Place Gutenberg, dedicated to charities.

For families, the children’s village at Place Saint-Thomas offers a mini ice rink and storytelling sessions, while adults can sip champagne at the panoramic terrace of Galeries Lafayette (free entry, incredible view).
