Chef Inspired Creamy Dijon Sauce

chef inspired creamy dijon mustard

Creamy dijon sauce, thanks to its base of Dijon mustard, offers a balance of tanginess, spice, and sometimes sweetness, making it a popular choice in both home cooking and professional kitchens for its ability to enhance a wide range of dishes.

creamy dijon sauce

Ingredients for a creamy dijon

• 1/2 cup Dijon mustard (you can also use whole grain mustard or a mix of both for added texture)
• 1/4 cup heavy cream or sour cream (for a lighter version, use Greek yogurt)
• 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
• 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (adjust for sweetness preference)
• 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar or lemon juice (for tanginess)
• 1 small clove garlic, finely minced or grated
• Salt and black pepper, to taste
• Fresh herbs like dill, parsley, or chives, finely chopped (about 1 tablespoon)
• A splash of white wine for extra depth (optional)

Instructions

PREPARE THE BASE
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the mustard and heavy cream (or sour cream/greek yogurt). Whisk until smooth.
ADD LIQUIDS
Slowly drizzle in the olive oil or melted butter while continuously whisking to emulsify. This helps in giving the sauce a silky, creamy dijon texture.
FLAVORING
Stir in the honey, vinegar (or lemon juice), and minced garlic.

season

TO TASTE
Season with salt and pepper to taste. If you’re using it with a particularly salty dish, you might want to go easy on the salt.
HERBS & EXTRAS
If you’re using fresh herbs, fold them into the creamy dijon sauce now. This adds a fresh flavor and a lovely color.
OPTIONAL WINE
If you want to add a splash of white wine for depth, mix it in now. This is optional but can enhance the flavor profile, especially if the creamy dijon sauce will be used for something like a steak or fish.

Tips for Serving

Consistency

The sauce should be thick but pourable. If too thick, you can thin it out with a little cream, vinegar, or wine. If too thin, add more mustard or mayonnaise.

For Meats

Perfect drizzle over grilled or roasted meats like steak, pork, or chicken and of course, the perfect ingredient as an all-around dipping sauce.

As a Dip

Great with crudités, pretzels, or roasted vegetables or simply substituted for a delicate side dressing.

Salad Dressing

Use it as a base for a creamy mustard vinaigrette by adding a bit more oil and vinegar. For a spicy kick, add a dash of hot sauce or some finely chopped jalapeños.
